EXPLORE YUCATÁN

The Puuc Route or Ruta Puuc, in southern Yucatán is a sacred place in where the Ancient Mayas worship Chaac, god of rain, one of the most important Mayan Gods. Start this adventure taking the highway Mérida- Cancún, and after few miles, the road to Chetumal (Highway 18) until you reach Mani; in where you´ll find the signs to arrived at the first stop of the route, the CAVES OF LOLTÚN (Flower of stone) stunning subterranean figures of the Mayan Underworld. Admire the LOLTÚN WARRIOR FIGURE, the god that emerge from the underworld. We recommend to ask for a guide, that will explain you the figures as, THE CATHEDRAL, THE EAR and THE CANYON. Visit the MUSICAL COLUMNS which emit a singular sound: “LOLTÚN”, when you hit the stones. Enjoy the cave paintings as: hands, animals and faces , get surprised by the magnificence of  LOLTÚN.

 

CAVES OF LOLTÚN

 

Following the route, through other archeological sites of incomparable beauty ,learn about the Mayan architecture. On the route there´s LABNÁ (the old house) with its beautiful compounds as THE PALACE and THE MIRADOR (viewpoint). Highlights the world famous LABNÁ ARC or the FALSE ARC, a façade with friezes and columns decorated with huts; XLAPAK( old wall) with its architectonical gem that is called THE PALACE, whose façade boasts a board with perfect geometry , made of mosaic stones with frets, and whose corner are decorated with impressive CHAAC masks: SAYIL (place of ants), with its BALL COURT and THE VIEWPOINT, in where the archeologist rescue beautiful trails, now exhibit in the main entrance and the THREE-STOREY PALACE in which they developed new architectonical styles, and KABAH (artist´s hand) the second most largest , being Uxmal the first one. Houses compounds like the SUN TEMPLE, in where highlights the CODZ POOP PALACE (rolled palm-leaf mat) in whose façade shaped stone mosaics and CHAAC masks. The access to the rooms boasts steps with, once again, CHAAC masks, whose trunks are carved with palm matt designs, Imagine the luxury and the artwork on the stairs!

After cover the route, at the end is located a true jewel: UXMAL (the three -times built), one of the most important archaeological sites in México and the World, denominated Human Heritage by UNESCO.The most pure Puuc Art show. Counts with more than 150 buildings, the most beautiful and restored are THE PYRAMID OF THE MAGICIAN OR DAWRF, rounded corners, carved stones stairways and paths. The walls of the façade, with stone latticework and CHAAC fearsome jaws, frame the front door. One of the most beautiful archaeological monuments that has Yucatán and México.

Here at UXMAL also explore, the NUNNERY CUADRANGLE, four buildings whose imposing central courtyard have to be accessed through an archway. From this site admire the elaborate latticework walls, panels, figures of huts with roofs of feathers, birds, monkeys, snakes intertwined, and the omnipresent figure of CHAAC. Observe these facades plastered and painted with bright colors are a feast for the eyes and imagination.

Other notable structures in this place are the BALL COURT, THE GOVERNOR´S PALACE, one of the most impressive monuments of America, in where the fine and rich carved decoration were made with more than 20 000 stones. Harmonious and majestic, with colossal proportions, show off its CHAAC figures embraced by rattlesnakes (symbols of the sun ), the front depicts the TWO HEADED JAGUAR THRONE, a work situated in front of the main stairs of the GOVERNOR´S PALACE, worthy of admiration. THE TEMPLE OF THE TURTLES, precedes the GREAT PYRAMID, ideal for climbing and, from its magnificent height, observe the best view of the Yucatecan Puuc Route landscape.
